A single parchment sheet containing names of Southwark defaulters for the third payment, in 1551, of the 'relief' granted to king Edward VI in March 1549. Individuals with moveable goods worth more than £10 were to have been taxed on them at 12d per pound if native-born, at double this rate if foreigners. Aliens with moveable goods worth between 20s and £10 were also assessed, to pay 12d per pound. Aliens who did not qualify for assessment on moveable goods were to pay a poll tax of 8d per head, apart from married women, soldiers and children under 12, who were not liable. |
