Return to Subsidy List

A single parchment sheet, a certificate of non-distraint (inability to seize property for non-payment) for the subsidy granted to Philip and Mary on 19 February 1558, and payable by 24 June that year.  The document is damaged; large portions are missing, and much of the remainder stained.  For the date, only the regnal year of 5&6 Philip and Mary has survived.  Thus the certificate must have been drawn up sometime between the beginning of Philip's fifth year on 25 July 1558 and Mary's death on 17 November 1558.  The collectors certify they have been unable to collect the assessed sums from those named in the document, or to distrain goods to the relevant value.  Various names are legible, but they lack context because of the damage; it's unclear whether any given name is that of a St Saviour parishioner.  Hence, transcription has been deferred.  Further details
